Since 2015, Anarchy Dance Theatre has focused its attention on how our everyday language affects our movement, and how dance can be brought into the masses as something that everyone can practice. The Schoolyard Performance Project, first begun in 2016, features a series of workshops which help students become more familiar with their bodies and physical movement. From 2016 to 2020, we have brought long-term collaborating artists to school classrooms, where in addition to everyday language, they bring the aspect of time into their discussions and practice of physical movement. In addition to exploring creativity through physical movement, we draw students’ attention to the issue of time, and how time relates to their individual lives.
React to the world around you with your senses and movements.
Everyone can dance, everyone can be an artist: this is the guiding principle of our project, aiming to bring the art of dance and the process of artistic creation to students and the general public. Under the guidance of our instructors, ordinary people learn to explore new possibilities for their bodies in motion and enjoy the experience of dance, while also gaining insight into how choreographies are created and how dancers rehearse.
Expert control of the body is not the aim here; rather, we seek to bring attention to observation and creative ideas. Art is more than something that merely seeks to be “appreciated”, but a process that even non-artists can participate in, and as our lay participants find their senses of observation grow sharper and keener, they then learn to express their individuality, imagination and creativity through physical movement.
This project for students and participants without dance experience consists of workshops and public performances. Workshops encourage the exploration of physical movement, while public performances offer a chance to experience what it is like to be on stage, to foster teamwork between participants, and to nurture communication and friendships with dancers from other schools and ensembles. By reaching across different schools and age groups, we plant the seeds of dance early and widely in students’ lives. We aim in the future to integrate performance art classes or other subjects into the project, bringing new perspectives into art as a part of life.
